Health Benefits of Tequila + Pina Colada Recipe

July 24, 2015

We all know the drill. You are out with friends, having a few cocktails and there is always that one person in your clique that yells out “Shots” and immediately things go downhill fast…

They say Tequila and I say.. Waaaaiiit. Whaaaat?! Um… I don’t want to be hungover tomorrow.

Ok, so seriously, tequila has a bad rap. The country song by Joe Nichols “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Come Off” sums it up perfectly! After a few tequila shots, things just seem to happen and clothes seriously do seem to just fall off, right? Most of the time, this is a drink of choice for those that are trying to numb the pain of being dumped or if you are spending your days beachin’ it up. Tequila always has a way of making you feel better- or to feel nothing at all, right? But when it comes to your go-to drink, tequila usually isn’t one that people gravitate towards. And this is merely for the fact that we associate getting white girl wasted and feeling like crap the next morning with it! But did you know that tequila has some AH-MAZING health benefits that might make you rethink those vodka waters loves?

Aids in Weight Loss

Crazy right? Typically if you want to lose weight the first thing we all tend to do is cut the alcohol. But what if I told you that drinking tequila can actually help you shed a few pounds? Now don’t take this as you can go out and down 5 shots (which typically leads to those late night food binges) but if you are drinking a controlled amount of tequila you can benefit from the weight loss properties of agavins. Agavins is a particular kind of sugar that is found in tequila, and these sugars are a refined molecular structure which keeps blood sugar levels where they need to be. As a result, majority of the calories pass through your system unused as opposed to other alcohol sugars, which are not so glycemic index friendly. But don’t confuse agavins with agave nectar, completely two different things here.

Helps with Digestion

Taking a shot of tequila after a meal has been linked to aiding digestion as well. A shot before a meal to rev up your metabolism and appetite, and then a shot after to soothe and assist digestion. Again, probably not a good idea to throw back more than 2-3 shots here.

You won’t be hungover

Now you have to drink the high shelf, “100% agave” tequila here beauties, not the cheap crap! The cheap tequila is filled with other sugar alcohols and will knock you on your butt and will have you hating life in the morning. Trust me on this!

Bloat be gone

Cheers to this one beauties! I love having a few cold ones on a hot summer day, but let’s face it, I don’t like how beer fills me up and leaves me feeling like a hot bloated mess. Tequila helps to regulate the absorption of fat in your intestines, so swap out those beers for tequila cocktails or shots. Seriously, have a few shots and drink water in between and the bloated, heavy feeling will be a thing of the past.

Let’s get our sleep on

Thanks to its relaxing benefits, tequila can help calm the nerves and may even aid in inducing sleep for the deprived. Now, it’s never good to depend on any substance to help you sleep, but if you find yourself being an insomniac, instead of popping those pills, try a shot of tequila to help you relax.

Tequila Pina Colada

I am not a big fan of sugary cocktails, but I do enjoy a pina colada every now and then. What I don't enjoy, is the sugar coma it puts me in. I am full of energy one minute and then I come crashing down hard the next!  So decided to do some cocktailing experiment  and I came up with a healthy twist on a ole time fave.. but this pina colada won't leave you in a sugar daze.
